Kingsbridge Halloween 2026: West 231st Street Block Party

Last year, Theory 9's Trick or Streets festival closed the dead end of West 231st Street at Sedgwick Avenue on Saturday, October 25. That was a week before trick-or-treating. This year NYC DOT lists the same Kingsbridge organizer on the same stretch, West 231st Street from Kingsbridge Terrace to Sedgwick Avenue, for Saturday, October 31, 2026, from noon to 5 p.m.

By Thursday, October 29, most of the northwest Bronx's Halloween events have already happened. The longer-running ones were scheduled early, and the block party moved onto the holiday itself. The neighborhood's own block-level festival is now the main local event on Halloween day, with Friday night at Manhattan University as the warm-up.

Last year it ran early

Theory 9 is a Kingsbridge-based nonprofit founded by Shakir Seagers and Izaiah Barrow. According to Norwood News, its work includes youth education, basketball programs, holiday events, tournaments and food drives. In its coverage of the 2025 festival, Norwood News called the event annual and reported that a large crowd turned out on the dead end at West 231st and Sedgwick.

Before last year's event, Seagers explained the idea to Norwood News:

"Trick or Streets is about creating a safe space for our youth and families to celebrate. We're turning community blocks into places of unity, laughter, and empowerment right here in The Bronx."

In 2025 the festival was an early celebration that came before the holiday. In 2026 it falls on the holiday. Families on the blocks around Sedgwick Avenue and Kingsbridge Terrace now have an organized, closed-to-traffic afternoon on Halloween itself, a few minutes' walk from home. The DOT listing gives five hours, noon to 5 p.m. That leaves time to get home before dark for the door-to-door part of the night.

What has already happened nearby

The shift stands out because of what surrounds it. The Riverdale Press published its northwest Bronx Halloween roundup on October 9. Its list is mostly events that finish before October 26.

  • Riverdale Kiwanis Halloween window painting, October 17. Held every year since 1957, the contest has young artists ages 5 to 18 paint storefront windows across Riverdale. The painted windows stay up afterward, so the artwork is still on display along Riverdale's commercial strips this week.
  • Teens Get Crafty: Bat Crafts!, October 23. Kingsbridge Library held a 4 p.m. bat-art session for teens, with materials and snacks provided.
  • Boo on Mosholu, October 24. The Kingsbridge-Riverdale-Van Cortlandt Development Corp. turned Mosholu Avenue into a Halloween trail from 1 to 4 p.m., with a trunk-or-treat at P.S. 81, 5550 Riverdale Ave. October 25 was the rain date.
  • Wags to Witches, October 25. The Van Cortlandt Park Alliance held crafts, face painting and storytelling on the lawn of the Van Cortlandt House Museum, 6036 Broadway, plus its fourth annual Canine Costume Contest at 3 p.m. An Urban Park Rangers nocturnal wildlife hike followed from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Two of those four, Boo on Mosholu and Wags to Witches, fell on October 24 and 25, the weekend before Halloween. That is the same slot Theory 9 used in 2025. If the block party had kept last year's timing, it would have competed with both for the same families on the same weekend. Moving to October 31 takes it out of that crowded weekend. If you missed the park and Mosholu Avenue events, the Van Cortlandt Park fall calendar and the Riverdale Avenue openings we covered earlier this fall are still worth a walk.

The two days left

For a reader in Kingsbridge or Kingsbridge Heights on Thursday, October 29, here is what's left:

  1. Friday, October 30, 4 to 7 p.m. Boo at MU. Manhattan University's official event calendar lists Boo at MU across Smith Auditorium, the Quadrangle, the Smith Steps and the Smith Auditorium Lobby. The Riverdale Press describes it as free and hosted by Kappa Delta Pi, with trick-or-treating, crafts, games and other student-run activities at 4513 Manhattan College Parkway.
  2. Saturday, October 31, noon to 5 p.m. Theory 9 Trick or Streets. West 231st Street, Kingsbridge Terrace to Sedgwick Avenue.

Kingsbridge isn't the only part of the Bronx closing streets on Saturday. DOT's Trick-or-Streets list shows several other October 31 events within reach of the neighborhood:

  • James Baldwin Plaza on Goulden Avenue at Mosholu Parkway, run by the James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Decatur Avenue, East 193 Street to Fordham Road, run by Miss Abbie's Kids, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Evelyn Place Open Street, Aqueduct Avenue to Grand Avenue, run by I Am My Community, noon to 9 p.m.
  • Decatur Avenue Open Street, East 195 Street to East 194 Street, run by the Decatur Block Association, 1 to 8 p.m.

The West 231st Street festival's noon start and 5 p.m. finish fit into a family's day without much conflict. You could do the morning at James Baldwin Plaza, the afternoon on West 231st, and still make Evelyn Place before 9 p.m. The Bronx Zoo is also running Boo at the Zoo, its daytime Halloween celebration at 2300 Southern Boulevard, on weekends through November 1, so Saturday and Sunday are both still open there.

What a block party at Sedgwick looks like

The DOT listing names the organizer, the street and the hours. Last year's festival shows what the afternoon tends to include. Norwood News reported live music, games, arts and crafts, and face painting. A Kingsbridge Heights parent told Norwood News that her children made bracelets at the crafts table and also did pumpkin-making and balloon shapes.

The setting helps. The festival uses a dead end at West 231st and Sedgwick, so the closure is a pocket off the through-traffic grid rather than a shut-down avenue.

One practical note: DOT warns that Trick-or-Streets events may be delayed or canceled. Check the city's Trick-or-Streets page on Saturday morning before you head out.

Food on West 231st, by address

A five-hour afternoon outside with costumed kids usually means someone gets hungry. West 231st Street is one of Kingsbridge's main commercial corridors. The Kingsbridge BID's merchant directory lists dozens of dining spots in its district, many of them on the same street as the festival. These are the West 231st Street entries, in address order:

  • Dale Diner, 189 West 231st St.
  • Chipotle, 190 W. 231st St.
  • Broadway Pizza & Pasta, 192 West 231st St.
  • Charlie's Pizza, 204 West 231st St.
  • Dunkin, 209 West 231st St.
  • Panaderia Ixtrapan, 211 West 231st St.
  • Pioneer Chinese Take Out, 221 West 231st St.
  • Sam's Pizza, 232 West 231st St.
  • Godwin Coffee Shop & Tex-Mex Eats, 238 West 231st St.
  • La Villa Restaurant, 240 West 231st St.
  • Blue Diamond Coffee Shop, 249 West 231st St.
  • Sunshine Deli Grocery, 253 West 231st St.
  • Mi Lindo San Migulito, 257 West 231st St.

Around the corner on Broadway, the same directory lists Aroma Restaurant & Bar at 5523 Broadway, Gold Mine Cafe at 5578 Broadway, El Economico Restaurant at 5589 Broadway and El Malecon Restaurant at 5592 Broadway. For quicker stops, it also lists Shake Shack at 5510 Broadway, Auntie Anne's at 5532 Broadway, Subway at 5549 Broadway, and Dunkin Donuts & Baskin Robbins at 5501 Broadway. Hours on a holiday Saturday can differ from the usual schedule, so call ahead before you plan a sit-down meal around the festival.
